Those aren't really "outhouses" in the sense that most people think of them. The traditional outhouse: dig a hole, put the outhouse over it, when the hole gets full move the outhouse to another hole. The state park outhouses are over tanks that have to be pumped out.

I don't know if charm is the word I'd choose.

But hey, to each his own.

You can still put in a new outhouse in most of Maine. Those towns with 38 different zones may not allow outhouses. They also have no plan for extended power outages. We still plan on a new hole when we site the "privy". You move the outhouse. Dig a new hole close to the hold hole so the dirt you remove goes on top of the old hole in one swing of the back hoe bucket. The reason for forethought in this matter is so you don't need to step on the old site to step into the house on the new site. The consequences could be distressing to say the least.

It's taxed as any other out building - Shed, barn, garage, etc.

I guess when you grow up using one every summer since a child it's really no big deal. Not sure why people get all uppity over it. It's a camp - I go there to get away from everything else.

Without a foundation?

Don't need no stinkin' foundation to get taxed. Sheds get taxed.

When a state tax assessor came through here, we had a long conversation. He was very friendly.

Perhaps it is different from one jurisdiction to another.

Outbuildings with no foundation do not get assessed here.

This makes sense, since they are, by design, movable. How are they different from a trailer, or a canoe sitting on the ground?
