We don't see RC Cola up here. I know the favorite treat below the Mason Dixon Line is an RC and a moon pie. Many people here have never heard of an RC. I know about it only because of my time in the Navy.
I don't know when it was discontinued in Maine, but my older brother often drank RC cola. That was back when I was a kid, though. It didn't taste anything like Moxie to me.
When visiting Lisbon Falls a few years ago with an old friend, he took me on a tour of the area and when we were going through town, he mentioned that there was an old man in this store below that had something to do with the Moxie Festival every year. Perhaps the inventor's family or something? Or the grand marshal?
I read in Wikipedia that Moxie was supposed to be especially effective against paralysis, softening of the brain, nervousness and insomnia. I don't know about you but I can't use any more softening of the brain.
Have you ever liked an ADULT beverage at first taste? Moxie used to be the most popular soft drink in the country, so it has to be good!!!!!!! Just give it some time. As I said earlier, start with it ice cold and just take sips. It's actually weaker than it used to be.
I've tried it regularly for my entire life. It still tastes like carbonated Listerine to me. I can't get used to it.
My kids like it though (they must get it from their father).
I knew RC cola was more of a southern thing.......tried it years ago. In the same category as boiled peanuts.....yuck, what a waste of good peanuts. Wonder who came up with THAT one!!??
I just assumed that Royal Crown soda (RC) was available nationwide? Not many places I've been to even serve it. One place that did was a place called Coney Island Texas Lunch in Scranton, PA.
My brother was giving it a try in Portland, in the winter of 2012.
