Freeport is nice. Gets a tad busy in the summer for my tastes, but to each his own.

I've heard mixed things about L.L. Bean. I stress that I have NO firsthand experience. I am only repeating what others have told me. On the one hand, I've heard that they have great benefits and pay really well. On the other hand, I've heard that it is a very high-pressure sales environment. Sales people are required to "up-sell" and push-push-push more product. If they get caught not doing it, they get in trouble with the boss. I know people who quit L.L. Bean and took lesser-paying jobs simply because they didn't like the work environment.

Nearby Brunswick is a very nice place. Good combination of college, military, and working-class people.

Bath is also nice. Much more of a "working class" town than Brunswick or Freeport.

Topsham is basically Brunswick's next door neighbor. The neighborhoods are nice, the schools good, but they tend to have more strip malls and such than Brunswick.

Wiscasset is a great little town. Very quiet, except in the height of the summer season.

Ken welcome to the forum. Best of luck in your search! Wish I had something helpful about that area, but other than to say I've been there and I like it I can't say much.

Nobody gets flamed on the Maine forum. I was at LL Bean last weekend for the opening of their new hunting and fishing wing. It's much bigger than before. They had a 20% off sale on all outerwear so I bought their top of the line Maine warden parka. I'll be warm no matter what.

LL Bean went away from their roots and tried to bring in the yuppie crowd. They de-emphasized hunting for quite a while and lost a lot of business to Kittery Trading Post and Cabelas. Now Cabelas is coming to Maine to fill that void and LL Bean is desperately trying to catch up. My parka was made in Bangladesh. I can't find a good parka made in the USA and I have looked.

My wife has worked at Bean for 27 years, last 8 years or so just during "peak". I worked there for 4 years. Great place to work, great discounts and the employee store is unreal.

Yup, some of the stuff is made overseas but their icon stuff like boots is made up the road in Brunswick. Yup, Cabelas is coming to Maine. Bean has broadened it products beyond hunting and fishing much to the discern of many.

The main store in Freeport, the town retail built, is open 24hrs/day, 365 days/yr. The main doors don't even have locks on them.

In the Freeport main store campus Hunting and Fishing had their own building for a long time but a few years ago Bean put the Kids stuff in there. It didn't take long to realize that it was a big mistake so happidly they changed it back a couple of years ago.

Bean is going to be starting soon a major expansion in the area of the outlet store and the main store.
