Anyone have ideas for the heating cost of a 2000 sqft house in winter?

MY house is app 2000 sq Alot depends on your heating system Baseboard or
forced hot air. I have Forced hot air. Last winter was the mildest on record and we still spent almost 800 to heat our house. That was with someone always home and the heat turned back to 65 during the day and 62 at night

Do you know what's the most efficient heating system, forced hot air or electricity?
Another thing, how many months should we keep heating system on?

800 for the winter which is kinda cheap considering what we did not have for a winter. We typically burn around 5 to 6 hundred gallons of oil per year. Electric heat is out of the question way to expensive. I would imagine the most efficient type of heat system is base board type heating. YOU can expect to have the heat on from about now till April or until spring decides to show up.

OMG - Over six months you only spent $800 total? I have gas heat and I'll spend well over $200 a month not to mention the cost of electricity - and I live in Alabama. Electricity to run the Heat Pumps for the summer average $375 a month and down here that's most of the year. My average utility bills combined are around $400 a month. Granted I would say that was for a 3,000 sq. ft. home, but the children are all gone and my hubby has already moved to Maine, so it's me, two cats and a small dog - and we live just in the downstairs now. I was really concerned about the cost of heating fuel being way more than what I am used to down here but you have really put my fears to rest. Probably not comforting to you - but helps me alot.

using electric heat is a really bad idea- it is much more expensive and a worse system. Electric heat is sparadic with highs and lows in temperatures. At least in Maine, there is no air conditioning costs.

Our house was roughly 2000 sq ft, used oil fuel and hot water radiators for heat. We spent roughly $6000 over 16 months for heating oil.

Maine is a wonderful state, and I really miss it. However, the cost of utilities was a killer. Here's a thread that talked about utilities in more detail:

I wouldn't count out using A/C in the summer. I just spent this past summer in central Maine and we used a window A/C unit to alleviate the humidity and control the heat in July. To use it was a rarity but it sure was nice to have it when needed.

For OHHO: Your heating bill will depend on how cold the winter is. Generally, the nights start to get cold enough for heat beginning in September and will probably stay on through April. Look into Hot Water Baseboard Heat as the most comfortable type of heat, either by oil or gas. However, propane is more expensive that oil right now. Also, you may want to consider a secondary heat source, i.e., a wood stove or pellet stove. Wood stoves are cheap to heat and will offset the temp in the house to keep your main heater from running more often.
