NorCal is a much different story. I lived there for 23 years and really enjoyed it. I lived an hour from the sea and an hour from the snow.....seemed perfect to me. Probably the most beautiful state around. It is expensive tho....although not compared to Socal. But everything is relative......wages are much higher AND some things such as groceries are cheaper than Me. Utilities are also much cheaper too. I've been back here for a couple years(having grown up here) and am really already fed up with long winters, short summers and constantly rising prices and taxes.

Depends where you buy your groceries. If you buy at Hannaford or Shaw, then maybe. But if you have a giant Walmart Supercenter, then maybe not. Our grocery bill in Ellsworth for the same quantity of food when we buy every 12 days or so is about $270 at Shaw, $240 at Hannaford, and $175 at Walmart.

Astounding! I don't really care much for Walmart, but I can't walk away from a minimum of $200 savings in food buying per month. That almost pays my yearly taxes.

I would pack my bags and move there tomorrow! Love long and cold winters, snow, great nature, deep dark woods, the sea....

But my husband is from Texas and wants to settle down in the south.

That's true slyfox. I buy $40 worth of groceries at my local IGA and walk out with one bag! I am not a big fan of walmart but they are cheaper there.....but I have to factor in a 1 1/2 hour round trip and the gas too. I lived in a "small" town in Cali.(pop 60,000) and we had at least 4 or 5 grocery store choices. Seafood was way cheaper too....not counting lobster! Never could get used to Pacific Lobsters with no claws....LOL.

Great post! I've been wanting for YEARS to move to Maine, specifically Eastport. We've talked about it a few times, even had our TN house up for sale at one point but hubby always backed out. He's been diagnosed with a terminal illness since the last attempt at a move north. The kids moved out and seem stable. It's time for us to take care of us and hubby needs to be near his family and friends he grew up with. So we're seriously thinking that maybe this time we'll really move. The grandkids are the only thing that are holding us back right now. Good to know there is good medical care in Maine. In TN it's horrific!!

Grass is always greener is a true story I guess. I have a friend/old classmate mrs1885 that moved back to Maine from Tennessee. He has put his place on the market and can't wait to move back! Not sure where but I know he said in the mountains somewhere. Winters, high taxes and even politics don't agree with him. I guess each to his own.........

Then dump your husband and leave Texas.

Clearly you have to get your priorities straight here.

Lynnylo, keep on him. I've been dreaming of Maine for ............. maybe 15 years? Hubby wasn't really on board until recently. Still not 100% sure - we are very close to our grandkids here - but it's looking possible. Hubby may change his mind.

I've been dreaming of sailing(in my own sailboat) for almost 50 years. Now I have two sailboats sitting in my yard. Have either of them gotten in the water yet? NOPE!
