One advantage that Waterville/Central Maine has over Bangor and Camden IMO is that the people are friendlier and it might be a better area to raise a family. It also has a very central location. It's not far from anywhere (30 min to Augusta/1 hour to Camden/1 hour to Bangor/1.5 hours to Portland)

All good points to consider. My children are 3 1/2 and 6 months. So, wherever we end up it will be for the long haul. Don't plan on moving again until "retirement," if even then.

Mainer61- I would reply to your DM... however, according to City-data I have "...reached your daily limit of 1 Direct Messages. Date the restriction will be lifted: 11-17-2013 03:02 PM."

Is this normal for city-data? Does this restriction apply to all newcomers?? Interesting.

Wow...I have no idea...probably some quirky rule or something.

We moved to Camden from out-of-state 4 years ago and we love it here! Both of our kids attend school here, and we're very happy with the district. (One child is in the middle school in Camden, the other at the high school in Rockport. The elementary school is also in Rockport. Here is the school district web site: FiveTown CSD & MSAD 28)

Yes, Camden gets very touristy in the summer, but once you live here it doesn't take long to find back streets to avoid the main part of town. We actually enjoy tourist season. It's fun to see out-of-staters and people from other countries enjoying the scenery and bring their tourist dollars.

The only downside for us is the lack of shopping. Our 2 teenagers would love to go the mall more often, but the nearest ones are in Portland and Bangor. There is a TJ Maxx and JC Penney in Rockland (10 minutes or so from Camden) and a new Super Walmart just opened in Thomaston (about 20 minutes away). Augusta is the nearest area for places like Old Navy and Target (about an hour away). I've learned to do a lot of internet shopping, which is fine with me!

OP, any more specific questions about Camden/Rockport, please ask! I'm happy to help!

I just rechecked the forums.. Thanks "Lovemaine" for the response. Its nice to get an out-of-state perspective. My husband was just up in Camden very recently and LOVED it. He thought the people he interacted with were lovely and the area idyllic. He feels strongly that this is a place where we can take root, raise our family (7month old and 3 1/2 yr old) and grow old- retire. He loves to ski and the idea of being able to take the girls out to the Snow Bowl appeals to him greatly.

I shop primarily online anyway- no change there. I don't mind lack of major shopping establishments.. that means bigger city- usually- and higher crime. I'd rather have a quaint, safe, everyone knows everyone type of community.

My husband and I would like to rent- in the event we move to the area- for a year, prior to purchasing. Is this a possibility? I am having a very hard time finding such options/availability online. I'll be heading up there soon, as well, to check out the area, etc. I trust his judgement, though, and hope he receives positive news from his prospective employer before my trip!

That has been my observation too. The more urban a place is [densely packed] the more crime will exist.

Renting for the first 6 months - year is very smart. You get a chance to explore the area, and take your time deciding where you really want to live.

We rented for 3 months when we first moved here. We didn't want to be rushed into buying, and it worked out great for us. We went through On the Water in Maine Inc. - A Full Service Vacation Rental Agency. They're primarily a vacation rental business, but also have some longer term rentals (at least that was true 4 years ago). Also Vacation Rental Homes, Cottages and Camps on the coast of Maine - Camden Accommodations and Camden ME Real Estate | Midcoast Maine Real Estate - Megunticook RE are worth a try.

I also do most of my shopping online. I sure don't miss the mall! My kids do sometimes, but they've learned to live without it.

Best of luck with your plans! Hope everything works out for you!

(If you need the name of an outstanding real estate agent when it's time for you to buy a home, I know of a few in Camden. I'd be happy to pass that info. on to you via private message!)
