Sorry - the NJ in this instance is National Journal.

I was so embarrassed by Maine when Chellie Pingree was voted in over the moderate Dean Scontras in a landslide that I moved. He had bold, fresh and progressive ideas to reform and simplify the tax code and downplayed any social issues. Chellie Pingree is just cookie-cutter democrat with no defining convictions

If you live in southern Maine, you live in the suburbs of Massachusetts. The days where real Mainers dominated that portion of the state are long over.

A liberal by any other name is still a liberal.

And a conservative by any other name is still a conservative - well, that definition has changed some over the past few years with the advent of the T-party. I don't cotton to any of these, and have been a Mainer for nearly 60 years. And I've never found the "liberal" agenda - helping people, neighbors and contributing to society - a bad thing. Can't say the same thing about the other end of the spectrum. But each extreme should be eschewed, since some at each have their own, selfish goals and seeing the forest for the trees is what a REAL Mainer does. Ain't no flatlanders on this farm, and the Koch brothers don't direct what we think or feel. Registered Independent back when Nixon was caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Didn't like either party. Still don't. Which is why Real Mainers seem to have an Independent streak. Angus King is just another carpet bagger from Virginia, and his "liberal" policies are just as much a scam as his "independence." If you think a monied, right leaning lobbyist can't get a multimillionaire's ear, you're deluding yourself.

Good or bad, it's what Maine is today. People need to know this before moving here.

If you think Maine is liberal, you haven't lived in a liberal place.

Nothing wrong with liberal. Nothing wrong with conservative. I figger I'm both. I don't see Maine as a "liberal" State, and I've lived both places. It's more a very independent State. What IS wrong with politics is the mouth breathers from both ends of the spectrum trying to convince everyone in the restaurant within earshot of their side of the story - which is usually a laughable conspiracy theory. You see some of the drivel posted here and there, particularly in the comments sections of the local newspapers. It's pretty sad and quite embarrassing there's so much hate in our world today. I just educated a very right leaning Judge (he started it) as to the truth of the INA and 8 USC and the "immigration problem" and "amnesty" lies, for instance. His whole view changed, especially when a friend of his in on the conversation confirmed what I explained. It's all makes great political fodder, but rarely carries much truth. The trouble is, some people fervently believe. It's kinda like religion. It's why I like Maine. We're independent and the drum beating Earth Firsters and Tea Partiers are pretty much disregarded by the Mainestream. And I can get up and throw a five on the table and get away from the restaurant politicians.
