Hello everyone. My wife has a job offer at Inland hospital in Waterville. She will also be working @ the hospital in Pittsfield a few times a month. What I am asking is if you had to choose a town to live, which one would you choose? Let me tell you about us to give a prospective. We are in our late 30's, we have no children, and we are not into partying. We are looking for a town with some good restaurants, outdoor activities, nice homes, low crime, and lower taxes. I am also planning on working in or around Augusta. Thanks for all the help.

Waterville itself is probably your best bet. Things are pretty rural in that part of the state and Waterville is centrally located for the Pittsfield and Augusta commutes. Waterville has some great restaurants downtown and is dirt cheap. Smaller towns like Fairfield may be a little cheaper, but unless you are 80 you will probably be bored out of your mind there. I know two married professional couples in their early 30s who live in Waterville and they both like the area. The public schools are surprisingly good too if children are on the radar at all.

Thanks. Yes we are still trying to have kids, if not we will adopt. We liked the Oakland area, didnt really get a chance to see the China área. Does anyone know the tax rates for each of those áreas? And would you recommend living in Augusta?

Winslow and Sidney have some real pretty rural areas and are next door to WTV which has the things you require in it....as well as close to the highway for travel.

Pittsfield has no restaurants, Dunkin Donuts, or anything. I live here. Good municipal services...schools are nothing special. Low crime rate.

I've heard good things about Oakland, but I am not familiar with the town.

Augusta is the arm pit of Maine. Not a very pretty place.

I'd say that there are worse armpits than Augusta!

I'd look at Albion, China, Vassalboro........all rural but close to both Augusta and Waterville.

You most likely would like Waterville as opposed to the smaller country towns. I personally wouldn't look in Augusta. If you do pick Waterville come up to Bangor once in a while - 60 miles north - and check out the great restaurants we have here, along with live theater and we also have a casino now. There are lots of great performances at our new Cross Center and on the Bangor Waterfront in the summer.
