I am trying to think positive about selling my house and plan for the next step in moving to Maine. We are thinking that renting a place might be a good idea—to get up there, get to know the areas and then do some serious house shopping come spring. My question has to do with the likelihood of finding a rental for about 6 months that would accept, two dogs. We would be interested in the areas around Portland. We also are under the impression that some of the houses we were following that went off the market in November--might not have sold and might be available again come spring. Is that likely? Thanks in advance for any advise.

I am already giving this idea second thoughts--because what I have found are unfurnished apts. and that would mean moving and setting up my furniture twice! LOL or finding a furnished apt and and storing all my stuff. Seems like a terrible hassel.

Hi Elston,

We're also planning on renting when we first arrive in Maine. I found this website that may be of help to you. I haven't registered on this site yet, but I think if you do register you can narrow your search down to furnished rentals which allow dogs. Hope this helps!

I have seen a few listings for lease homes that will allow pets. Most of the ads do specify whether or not they do. We have a 2 year old Great Pyrenees that we would be SO sad to have to leave behind. She's just like one of the kids!

We rent,.. we have a dog. Most owners don't mind as long as you're a responsible owner. Even if it says no pets, if it's a house with a yard you can usually negotiate, offer to pay a "pet deposit".

Holy, prices are WAY higher for rent downstate than they are up here. I didn't think there would be that large of a difference. I would expect higher of course, but I know somebody up here renting a 4 bedroom house on a corner lot, very nice place, and they are paying $525 a month. Before we bought the place we are in (3 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath, all maple hardwood floors, double lot in town, new furnace, stove, fridge, Water heater, roof) we paid $350 a month. I about downloaded when I saw apartments for $1200 on that site.

I've been watching rent in the Portland area for over a year. My "watching" is all online, of course, but it certainly seems like their rents are increasing at a steady rate.
