My Uncle and I usually hike Mt. Washington once a year and this year we would like to do some hiking in the Gorgeous state of Maine.
We prefer a mountain that we can camp on. I was thinking Mt. Katahdin, but would like some other good suggestions. Thanks!
Ideal hike should have:
-portion of hike above Alpine Zone
-scenic views
-traversed wihin 8-10 hours or less
-allow camping (at least designated camp areas but natural camping better)
-moderate to difficult
If you were doing it for scenery and not especially difficulty I would recommend Cadillac Mt. in Acadia National Park. The camping is good in the surrounding area but not on the Mt.
Another beautiful spot is Saddleback in Rangeley in the western part of the state.

If you want to camp in Baxter, check out their website. Camp sites can be reserved on a rolling schedule and choice ones are scooped up about as soon as they become available. What you want is to hike into Chimney Pond, spend a night in a lean-to there. Hike to the peak of Katahdin the next day, then back to Chimney Pond for a second night. Hike out the next morning. You can make it up from any of the parking lots to the peak and back in under 11 hours but a 3 mile hike to Chimney, camp, go to the peak and back, camp at Chimney the second night, and back out is the way to enjoy the park.. You won't be sorry.

And be sure to do the "knife edge" (a must when climbing Baxter Peak)!
I second the katahdin recommendations. It is hard to go wrong there.
If you are looking for something different, you could hike the AT from route 26, go up old speck (the state's third -tallest mountain), and continue on to speck pond. It isn't above treeline, but it meets all of your other criteria. It is worth looking into.
I actually read the initial post. You can camp only at government regulated sites in Baxter Park. No on-trail camping is allowed. The same is true at Cadillac in Acadia National Park. For camping above the tree line I recommend Bigelow. It's in Wyman Township north of Sugarloaf USA and Carrabasset Valley. A snowmobile trail goes close to the summit.
