Something tells me I know Forest a bit and he means charities in general. There are some great organizations, finding them when you need them isn't always easy. There is a telephone number nationwide that helps to coordinate some under the United Way. Dial 211 or go to 2-1-1 for more information.

We seem to have gotten away from the question about Why Maine is So Liberal.

If certain members wish to discuss other topics, they are welcome to start threads specific to those topics in the appropriate forums. Keep in mind this is a state forum and topics which are not either state specific, or which are controversial in nature need to be discussed in more appropriate City Data forums.

Thanks.

Well, isn't Maine's unofficial state motto, "the deep South of the North"? Or was that just someone's whacky t-shirt that I saw?

I think that it is far too easy to label those with an opposing viewpoint as either a liberal or a conservative simply because you disagree with it rather than looking at what is being said objectively.

For the record Democrat does not equal liberal.

Those are your own preconcieved notions of conservatives. Though in reality I would consider myself a libartiarian I know of no one under 65 that that still thinks that way. There will always be ignorant hatefull people in this world that will hate anyone who is different than them. But It's wrong to think that someone else who would never vote liberal they must have somthing against gays.

And I am also proud that I would never vote Liberal as I do not think those are the values this country was founded on.

The original articles of organization,[for my home church] written in 1838, contained the following preamble: "Liberality in opinion is universally acknowledged...as a generous and amiable trait in the character of the individual; if it gives loveliness to the secular concerns of people why should it not be permitted to add grace and luster to religion?"

I have always considered being liberal to be a virtue, not a political dirty word. I am proud to be liberal in the tradition of a long line of forebearers from Maine. I also am conservative in regard to my deep respect for our history and the principles that inspired our liberal and revolutionary founders.

Libertarian is definitely not a dirty word, as most of us like to be able to give of our time and money..just not the government coercion factor on this or anything else!

I guess that I should address this post.

I believe in tithing.

I have felt 'burned' by giving money to churches in the past, so while I do still tithe I do not give to a church.

I do belong to a few different organizations who each support their own charities.

For example: one group focuses on retirement homes.

Another group does eye-clinics for public school children, those clinics work with school districts and they perform screenings and treatments for free, for public school students.

Another group supports 'Hearing, and speech therapy and language disorder' clinics which also work with school districts across the nation and they provide their services free to school children.

Another group owns and operates 23 children's hospitals nationwide, they treat disabled children for free.

We also support NMCRS [The Navy / Marine-Corps Relief Society] who offers low interest loans and grants to help US Navy sailors and Marines and their families.

We also clip food coupons and send them to military familes living overseas.

Does this clarify things?
