My two older sisters are worried that their Mah Jong days will be over when we move to Maine . I really hope I can find a Jewish neighborhood that is not in Portland. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really dont want to have to take up the game myself!!

Thanks Elston! Bangor is much closer to Belfast, which is where I hope to settle!

Temple Shalom & Beth Abraham Synagogue

Originally the Jewish community of Lewiston-Auburn was divided into two congregations, one in Lewiston and one in Auburn. Now the twin cities are still served by those two congregations but they are both located in Auburn. The Congregations of Beth Jacob, Lewiston, and Beth Abraham, Auburn, were established in the 1920’s as Lewiston-Auburn’s first formal places of Jewish worship. These two congregations were preceded by a more-informal place of prayer and religious education called a Schul, a Yiddish word derived from the German word for school. In addition to the two Synagogues, the community was served by the Jewish Community Center in Lewiston. In 1981, the Beth Jacob congregation merged with the Community Center to form a new institution that combines the role of its predecessors: The Temple Shalom Synagogue-Center. Both Temple Shalom and Beth Abraham are conservative congregations that offer many services to this day

I found Beth Israel in Waterville also I think Jewish faith is pretty well distributed around the cities in Maine.

There is a synagogue in Waterville (50 minutes from Belfast) but there are no specific Jewish neighborhoods. Most are fairly wealthy in Waterville and they are scattered throughout the higher end neighborhoods.

DH grew up in Bangor and said that "Little City" was pretty much a Jewish neighborhood but doesn't know if it still is.

I don't think Maine has as many ethnically segregated neighborhoods as many other states. The ones it does have are pretty small. In Maine, people are mostly scattered about and just do their own thing

When I lived in Bangor (moved here in 99) we lived in Little City in Bangor...at that time it was still very Jewish. We loved it there....my kids really learned a lot from their Jewish friends, actually we all did, and we were invited to wonderful gatherings. Of course, only 2 of us in the neighborhood had Christmas lights up!

oh, and the food! Having grown up Catholic in a little town I'd never tasted many of the traditional foods! yum!
