Yup you can buy them online. Our neighbors did several years ago and it's probably why we have a zillion of them around here now. Not to sound judgemental but they all look the same and are most likely related some way. No they don't have little rebel flags on their wings....shame on you for thinking that!!

Now that provides a hilarious mental image! That statement is most decidedly "Maine-ah" a-yuh! Love it!

They found us around here. They are plentiful in the ball fields ! Hairspray seems to be like a "giant beacon in their tiny seas" when it comes to finding heads to land on from my experience anyway.

Deer flies have always been the worst for me, too. No contest. They win every time. Do dragonflies eat them too? Please say yes.

Be aware that my DH and I have personally suspended dragonfly additions at our pond because no one at the town or state level could give us a definitive answer as to the type of water plants in the kits. The kits we got from our Chamber come from down south and the plants look suspiciously like the invasive varieties that need to be eliminated.

I wrote that on May 28 last year. Today is May 3. I saw two moose flies today.

The deal is a new format at MNN to lighten my work load there. I haven't caught up with a map yet but the reports are current through yesterday. I have a few more reports to add tonight.

Thanks. Just to make sure. These little gnat looking things that swarm me anytime i go outside, are black flies correct? They dont seem to bite me or i maybe i dont let them? But even with 35% deet bug spray they still swarm all around my head when i stop moving outside. Get stuck in my ear for a second, etc.

Recently moved to this wonderful state.

Maine Nature News has been doing a weekly black fly report for years. It's the most widely searched for item on MNN (how sad is that!). Black flies are measured on a scale of 1 to 3, one being mild to three making you scream like a little girl and run back to the house.

Naples (Map), level 2
Danforth (Map 45), level 3
Talmadge (Map 45), level 2
Seboeis (Map 43), level 2
Great Pond (Map 34), level 2
Amity (Map 24), level 3

We went to Amity to count woodcock for the Dept of the Interior. The count starts 22 minutes after sunset on a clear night. It was still warm enough for the black flies to swarm at the start of the count so leaving the windows down to listen for peents for two minutes was rough. Fifteen minutes into the count they were down for the night.

Blackflies were probably level 1 in Yarmouth where we go fiddleheading the other day. Not bad at all. There are a few around the fishing holes but not all that bad. We NEVER see level three around the Southern part of the state. ( we do have a lot of ticks though ). I worked in Millinockett in the spring and I swear I have never seen anything like it. If you didn't have a head net on you'd just about choke on the little @#*%s!
