I asked my father-in-law when the rotary rigs came out........that was the end of "pounding" wells in.

He said late 1960's early 1970's.

Driller1 - the 10K figure is not a quote from anybody. I looked online to see a generic price range and since I like to err on the high side I thought 10K would be a figure to throw around. I can be imprecise like that. Yup.

The house was built in 1970. So your father-in-law seems right.

Get your quotes for a 1/2 horse power submersible pump and a F-L7 pressure tank. 5"PVC well.

I would like to see you use all brass fitting above the ground and plastic or, stainless below the ground.

Not the pump.......they are all about the same. (we will cross that bridge later)

We had a new pounded well in 1996. It was the replacement for the original 1810 hand dug well, which had performed for nearly 2 centuries, adding only a pump. I do have to admit that the well driller and his rig were quite aged at that time, and I'm sure he was a bargain basement price since we were broke back then.

Update on well: Convinced that a new well would be the way to go I got an estimate and it was based on a 200-ft deep dig. About $5600.00. I had the home inspection done and while that did not turn up anything dreadful, I decided that the cost of the new well plus the cost of some additional maintenance items would put me over my budget. I am still looking for a home and will concentrate on finding a home with city water and sewer.

$5,600 for a good 200 foot well is about average in Maine. I mentioned the idea of plastic well casing at a meeting of brokers. Nobody had ever seen one in Maine.

PVC is the best way to go.......they will last a lifetime.

Metal in the ground will get holes in it.......just a matter of time.
