I, too, end up doing a lot of hardware/software troubleshooting, even though my expertise is in teaching software to adults (in classroom settings, offices, and viturally). So let's team up -- maine4.us can do the fixin', I'll do the teachin' and starwalker can create a website for us.
P.S. Mainebrokerman - a little wine would be fine for me. ;-)
To get back on topic - great links have been provided here. Thanks!
However, I have tried Firefox on both my previous computer and this one. Locks them up like a rock and I can't do much of anything. I go back to IE and they run beautifully. I think I'm one of the few people who never has a problem with IE (knocking on wood immediately).
I agree.....love the spybot....and its free! I should probably make a donation for all the help the program has given me.
I will be moving to Maine as a retired math/science high school teacher, but I wouldn't mind teaching again in a local district. I am currently the Computer Network Specialist for our school. I am technically already retired, but have to work for health insurance as I am a few years away from Medicare/SSI. Early retirement without health care is dangerous for us late 50's people. If I found a job in Maine with healthcare, I would move to Eastport as soon as I could tie up loose ends here in Florida. No Child Left Behind is most likely going away, nobody is impressed with it anymore. I keep remembering a comment that an Eastporter made to me, "take early retirement, move up here to Eastport, be poor with the rest of us, and live life they way it should be."
I do computer repair, network installations, and webpage design (MenME is much better at that than I am) and have experience with radio/television transmitters. Do you think there is a market for a small computer related business in the area?
DID SOMEONE SAY COMPUTERS. Boy if there was a hobby/profiecency I wish I had it would be in computers. At least where I am at there always seems to be a job or two available for some kind of computer specialists. The MIS department in the city where my wife works has a great group of people working there. I have to beleive just about all minicpalities in maine need full time computer support.

I think you could get something going in that area. I know a couple of people who used to do it part-time, in addition to their full-time jobs. One of them made more money with the full-time job (self-employed, very well-established business--the only one of it's type in the area, several large contracts), so he has had to back off from doing the computer tech things for people. The other person I know works full-time for his health insurance benefits and does this on the side still....but has had to cut back on his clients because he couldn't get to all of them. Now he has probably 4 or 5 people that when they need him he'll go, but that's it. I'm trying to think of who else in the area does this....but because DH does this stuff, and I knew one of these guys to do this before DH came along, I'm just not sure. I'll see what I can find out
Also, one year while I was finishing some classes I did some sub work....no benefits, but I could have worked every day if I'd had the time! Just something to keep in mind Did you know the high school in Eastport has a radio/TV station?
Yes, WSHD FM. I checked the school system out in Eastport and was quite surprised to see they had a station. They had some technical skills in order to get an FCC license and operate the station. With the new LP FM licenses available, Easport could really get on the map with a station that would cover eastern Washington county. I did the preliminary field work, and their are several ways to go about this. From a techie standpoint what Eastport needs to do is make a sweetheart deal to put a cell tower on top of the water tower in town. That way Eastport gets some real cell service, and the town can get some rent money for tower space. Does Eastport have some deal brokers?
Maine needs more jobs like the call center that is coming to Calais. Clean, green jobs with large companies that will stay and bring stable jobs. I wish the call centers paid better, but it is a start.
Sorry to be so far off topic! I saw a lot of opportunities for small businesses in the Eastport/Lubec area.
Fly I've found the same thing....I have a considerable amount of education and experience in a field I no longer want to work in. I've thought about going back to teaching, but with some of the concerns I have with "No Child Left Behind" issues, and the sickening "consolidation" idea I'm afraid it's turned me off. I've worked for a not-for-profit grant funded program but the burn-out there is high, and I cut back to part-time. So essentially I'll be 42 in February and I don't know what I want to be when I grow up! There are a couple of things I'm looking into, so I'll see what happens.
LOL.. found out what I want to be when I grow up this August. Now if I can find a postion in or close to Eastport (highly unlikely) we could shave as much as 9 years off the move to Maine.

My current job was tailor made for me. My official title (anyone who knows me giggles when they hear my name and official title in the same sentence) is Human Resources Employment Admininstrator. I work in the nation's largest call center and left a job of 12 years, taking a pay cut and longer drive. This was to get out of a bad situation and in less then 18 months got a promotion off the phones. I process all potential applicants and newhires. Basically, the friendly face that tries to ease the nerves when they get there.
I meet interesting people, see some interesting things and work for a great management team.
Maine, I don't know if anyone all ready brokers for Eastport in that area, but I think Bud would be interested to hear thoughts in that direction When I was in high school I belonged to the radio/TV club. (I had a good "on air" voice!) We were pretty active then but it's never been brought to anywhere even close to it's potential.
I know what you mean about the call centers and I agree. I do wish they paid more initially, but it's a start, it's a job. A friend of mine is the economic development director for the county, and I know they're searching continuously for prospects.

Call centers can be more than a start. I never finished my college degree (started a family earlier than planned). Though I initially took a pay cut to $12.50 an hour (no exp. starts at $10), I am now up to $14.57 in less than 2 years on the job. Tons of room for advancement etc.
