Hoo, nasty! I can do without the extra crunch. O_O
I recall Friendly's being quite prevalent in Pennsylvania. Same chain, I take it? I was highly lactose-intolerant at the time, so never partook.

Might be one in Augusta.
Giffords is VERY good ice cream and wins awards all the time: Best Ice Cream in the World | My only complaint about it is that the cones have gotten more expensive and seem to be getting smaller and smaller. When they first opened the Bangor stand, the cones were expensive, but large. There are a number of mom and pop ice cream stands that sell very good ice cream and are more reasonable.

Default Fielder's Choice Ice Cream

Highly recommend Fielder's Choice, Route 126 in Sabattus (east of Lewiston) and Route 202/Western Ave. in Manchester (west of Augusta)--BEST ice cream! Generous portion sizes too. They are open from mid-April to mid-October.

We had two Friendly's in Keene, NH when I was growing up. During high school, we'd sit in the smoking section in the back just drinking coffee and taking up space. I believe one of them is still there. Their quality has been on the slide for years. Around here, there is still one at the Maine Mall in the Mall Side Plaza, and one in North Windham. The one in Portland closed quite awhile ago.

I remember when I first started going to Friendly's in high school you could buy a "Fribble" for 79 cents.

Who remembers Deering Ice Cream? Very similar to Friendly's but a Maine-based chain. I worked at two of their restaurants (Portland and Falmouth) as my first "real" job out of college. Not sure when they went out of business or why.

I remember Deering. They were bought out by another chain. They didn't just close down. Are there any Howard Johnson restaurants still open?

I worked for the first Deering Ice Cream store in South Portland many years ago. That was the best ice cream I have ever eaten! Their hot fudge was to die for!!!! It was real hot fudge that people would come in and buy separately. We charged 25 cents a ladle.

One thing I remember about the store was that there was a plaque in the dining area thanking Friendly's for helping them with the start-up. Now that's class... on both sides. I wonder where the plaque ended up? I was sorry to see them go out of the ice cream parlor business.

There are still Howard Johnson motels, but I'm not sure if there are any more Howard Johnson restaurants. Last I heard Bangor had one of the last remaining ones. The one I really remember was the one coming into Kittery on Rt. 1. The chain's claim to fame was all the flavors of ice cream they had, but I don't think they are into that anymore.
