I lived in Augusta for a bit (have moved away now) but one thing I noticed was that since they developed the north side of town up by the University with all the chain stores and chain restaurants it has made the town feel like it has less of a downtown community. Hard to explain but it feels kind of like the town is fragmented with three sections - the north end, the east side and the west side. Waterville feels different to me when I am up there. It seems more (for lack of a better word) cohesive of a community. As other have mentioned feels more like a college town. Augusta does not feel that way even though UMA is here. Maybe because UMA is up on the north end of town or because it's a commuter school - who knows really. If I was a 20 something again and my options were Augusta or Waterville I would definitely pick Waterville.

Hallowell (a couple of miles South) is a much better setting for dining, drinking and intellectual discourse. Otherwise, downtown Augusta might be the worst downtown of Maine's major "cities". A lot of suburban retail development in the last decade plus a new hospital.

So Hattie's clamshack is now the center for intellectual discourse? Or perhaps Slate's? I know I always feel my I.Q. raise several digits when I just approach Hallowell. Why I bet when they're quaffing beer at the Liberal Cup, they raise their pinkies.

Why are you being so sarcastic? The OP had a perfectly reasonable question and the answers were honest with changing opinions. You don't have to act like you're the font of all knowledge as far as Augusta is concerned.

I think Augusta's downtown is cute and has potential to be have nice little main street, but it's kind of disappointing at the moment. Not nearly as active as I feel it could be. I bought my girlfriend a necklace at a jewelry store downtown that made me feel like I was back in the 1950s. It was a neat experience. I'd also agree on Hallowell. It's a more charming, more vibrant downtown area. I prefer urban areas to rural and I would still choose to live near downtown Hallowell over Augusta because I feel like it has a bit more going on.

Earlier in the thread she commented on how people are wasting the thread that don't live in the area.... like someone driving thru Augusta 200 times in the last 5 years doesn't qualify them to comment. Then she regurgitated what I said about the definition of intellectual.

I find that most of the opinions about Augusta have little to do with direct experiences and more to do with the "feelings" about the city and or community. How can you have either a positive or negative feeling when the entire experience is driving through to shop at a big box store.
