Hi, My husband was offered a job at the Oakfield Wind Farm and he will be starting in July. Can someone give me some info on the area, where to look for a rental home, how much utilities run on an average etc. Any info would be helpful. Also if we could please refrain from negative comments about wind turbines I would greatly appreciate it, since I know they can be a very touchy subject for some people.
It's a nice area. There are several lakes right in or around Oakfield, so you may be able to rent something on the water fairly cheap. Houlton is much bigger and is 15-20 minutes away. What are you looking for?
Your electric bill will depend on heating types, water heater type, etc. I would say the average monthly bill is around $75.
We would like a house if possible, 2-3 bedroom. Right now we live in ny state and pay 1350 for a 3 bedroom townhouse. What is the cost of living like there?
You should be able to get a nice 3 bedroom house in that area for considerably less than $1,350. Just to give you an idea, there is a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom house in Houlton area for $800, tenant pays heat and utilities. (I will DM you the phone number; it appears they have other properties for rent as well).

Contact Perrin Realty in Island Falls. They usually have houses available for rent. You can google their contact info. You shouldn't have to pay anywhere near that number for something pretty nice.
Thank you all SO much, we pay 1350 for our town home, plus 300 a month for electric , 60 for water and 50 for gas...plus cable and internet lol. I am so excited about moving to Maine, I love mountains and wildlife and anything outdoors. I have a question what are the gun laws in Maine? Here we are not allowed to have our 9mm so we had to leave it at my dad's in Ohio when we moved back here from Kansas in 2013.
You can openly carry your 9mm in Maine with no permit, BUT it must be unloaded in a vehicle. To carry concealed or loaded in a vehicle you must have a permit to carry concealed. Maine is a "must issue" state. The "authorities" have 60 days to grant a permit or tell you why they have not issued it.
Maine has the highest rate of home ownership in the nation. The flip side of that is we have the lowest rate of rentals. The Oakfield wind tower project has many construction workers on site and most rentals in the area are occupied, including summer camps.
Thanks, we don't want a conceal or carry it loaded in the truck, we just want them back. UGH We don't really want to buy until we know the area well and decide where we want to settle, I hope we can find a rental home. If not I am not sure what we are going to do
I know some guys working on the wind farm in Oakfield who are staying in Millinocket. That would be about a 40 mile drive, mostly Interstate, but definitely can find rentals there. Probably there are guys to car pool with as well.
Bunch of houses on Craigslist in Houlton for rent. Not a particularly long drive. Perrin Realty on the Island Falls end, maybe Moore Realty on the Houlton end might have something to offer for rent.
