I was in the field a few days a go listening to talk radio when a new science story peaked my interest. It was about the West Nile Virus and how mosquitoes are not all the same from coast to coast. It seems that 'East Coast Mosquitoes' like to breed in dark, murky, stagnant waters and 'West Coast Mosquitoes' like to breed in clean, clear, standing water.

Yeah, I know what you're thinking. We have more down to earth skeeters in Maine and are not so high falutin.

What about Gulf Coast mosquitoes?

There are multiple breeds of skeeters here in Texas. The most aggressive are in the saltwater/brackish tidal marshes. Mosquitoes can be so thick they smother cattle. I don't ever remember being bit in Maine by a mosquitoes and I've fished dozens if not hundreds of days in the Pine Tree State. Have met a few blood sucking black flies though.

We have yearly cases of West Nile along with Eastern equine encephalitis.

On days when there is no wind the Thermacell devices really work to drive the mosquitoes away quickly and efficiently.
