I've recently been offered a job working in the Lewiston/surrounding areas, but will most likely be directly in Lewiston. I've read through a few threads here and most people seem to hate on Lewiston. I will be moving somewhere in Maine soon, along with my wife who is looking for a job in the biology/conservation field. We currently live in Fishkill, NY, a hour north of NYC.

Where should we look for an apartment? In Lewiston? In some special town between Lewiston and Portland?

Any suggestions are welcome, Thanks!

A few years ago, Lewiston had one of the highest rental vacancy rates in the nation. That was when the mills shut down. Now there are very few vacancies. As soon as an apartment becomes available, it is occupied by an extended family of Somalis who just love Lewiston.

I'm from Auburn and have lived and spent plenty of time in Lewiston. The bad parts of town are pretty much all sandwiched together in the downtown area. However, from Main to Pine, and Bates to Canal is gentrifying. Auburn is the same way. There are plenty of great neighborhoods in both cities.

Lewiston is bad yes, but I don't even think it can compare to New Haven, CT or Baltimore, MD. At least not yet anyways, give the immigration some more time.

I think Bridgeport CT is worse than New Haven.

Are Somalis still moving into Lewiston? How large will that community get, do you think?

Can anyone offer any specific areas to look into? Looking for an affordable apartment to stay in for a year or so.

I would prefer to be either in Lewiston or within 20 mins of the area.

I would choose Auburn to rent in over Lewiston. Also New Gloucester and Gray are located between Portland and Lewiston. Gray is about 25 mins away and a little more country than Lewiston/Auburn and has a turnpike exit so you could zoom up the turnpike and get off at the Lewiston exit or travel south and be in Portland in about 35 mins.
