I came across an article where it says Maine is #1 cat friendly state.

"The great cat state of Maine has the second-highest ranking of any U.S. State in these categories: percentage of cat owners in America (46.4), Facebook “likes,” animal protection law strength, no-kill animal shelters, and percentage of cat owners over dog owners (11%)."

So, from your experience, do you think this state is great for cat lovers/owners?

Yeah, as long as they can outrun the coyotes and get to the trees. Outside cats, I can't imagine living very long. I only say that because I have NEVER seen a cat in Maine.

Couldnt some yotes climb trees? Some dogs do it, so id recon a coyote or two might be able to. They could atleast keep it in the tree.

That's a pretty good point actually. If the branches are too weak as well the cat is toast, it can't stay vertically attached to the tree base forever.

I see (a) lots of people letting their cats run free all over the place, (b) plenty of 'LOST CAT' signs going up on telephone poles, and (c) not that many birds.

We do have some neighbors who let their cats roam the neighborhood, which bugs me to no end. But the cats don't tend to live very long. We have a wetland behind our house, and part of the summer fun is sitting by the open windows at night and listening to the foxes take down the local cat population. Go foxes.

We have alot of feral cats around here, and it is a real problem. Luckily the "Help fix me " program is great assistance in getting them spay/neutered but still.
Coyotes, fishers etc aside- still quite a few cats around. However- I know more people that own dogs than own ( non feral ) cats. Seems like every one has a dog here...

Dogs can't be beat, they truly care about you. As for the foxes, if I had more time and money, I'd probably be doing some sort of fox breeding to help replenish the population (far away from the farmers!).

Your dog truly, deeply loves you.

Your cat does not love you. Your cat is simply too small to eat you.

The one kitty that I've had since I've lived in Maine was a foundling. Some ingrate dumped her on our dead end road near the edge of the woods in November. She was subsisting on frogs and what have you, but she was destined to be coyote bait.
We took her in (she was already house-trained), got her fixed, and kept her as an indoor/outdoor cat. She never killed a native bird, kept our homestead free of voles and chipmunks. She a close encounter with a fox or some kind of predator, but we never left her out all night for that reason.
We had her for 11 years until she succumbed to liver disease. I loved her dearly.
