The fact that people feel perfectly safe in Maine to leave a car running is a reflection on how low the crime rates are here vis a vis other parts of the US.

I moved here from a metropolitan area that had 100 homicides the year I moved. You better believe I always locked my car there...even when it wasn't running.

Out of habits developed before I moved here, I always lock my car in Maine.

People leave their cars running in Minneapolis, as well as other parts of Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin. It has nothing to do with the amount of crime (how safe you feel is a perception that has more to do with personal issues then anything else) but has everything to do with how cold it can get. I have known people to leave their cars running for an entire shift at work on some really cold days. To my knowledge, none of them have ever been stolen.

Anyways....

That is good news about the credit cards.

If you look at national crime statistics, those areas are also traditionally considered "safe." See Most Dangerous/Safest State Award 2007

Good to know that a remote car starter requires a key. I've never left my car running in the driveway to heat it up because I worried about theft. Nice to know I could get a remote starter and the car couldn't be stolen even tho it is "running."

What bum luck for oceanfit185! Apparently in 2007 Maine had the fewest auto thefts of any state. See Safest States to Live In - AOL Money & Finance

Yeah, it is pretty safe. Minneapolis is pretty much the safest city for it's size.

Maine may have the fewest auto thefts in the country, but I do believe that it is close to the number one crime being committed.

Yeah, that is bum luck for Oceanfit. Some people will say that is what they deserve for being so 'stupid', but I disagree. This country needs to stop blaming the victims of crimes.

Most importantly, the car was found. At 2:30 AM last night I received a call from a Police Sargent in southern Mass saying he has my car. Unfortunitly it was involved in a high speed chase and sustained "some damage". Thats all I know for now. But still, its exciting news.

Also, I was able to get a much better deal on a car rental. Avis hooked me up! The woman working at the counter was great! She felt so sorry when she herd the story. She was able to give us a rate well below $ 20.00/day and included a free upgrade to an SUV. Considering I lost a civic, I am very happy with Avis. They now have a life long customer.

Next, it turns out the credit card company is not charging any fees. It turns out the cards were all with Bank of American and they don't charge. Some company's will, btu not bank of America! Again, I was really happy with there service.

So it turns out I am really really lucky! Thanks for all the support. I hope everybody can learn from this.
Glad your car was recovered and I hope it's not damaged too bad. That's good news about the rental and the credit cards. Goes to show there are some decent people out there!
