Once your child gets into the "system" outside of "regular ed." they want home visits. They will ask your child if there are firearms in the home. If they answer affirmatively, your child may be designated as an "at risk child". Then they REALLY take an interest in your family.

An increasing number of parents are contacting school board members to determine what the heck is going on with their child? Administrators and faculty hide behind "confidentiality" as an excuse to hide what is really going on with a student. The system is broken. Out of 36 developed nations, the USA ranks dead last in academic achievement. In that population of 50 states in the #36 ranking, Maine is down there with Mississippi and Louisiana.

That said, there are a few schools that are excellent. You can find them on the Maine Department of Education web site.
It was a tough decision. As a parent, you want your child to succeed, to be successful. During that meeting, it seemed as if our daughter stopped being a person, stopped being capable of so much greatness. And was just categorized by what she couldn't do. The Spec. Ed. person spoke of her limitations, her future difficulties. We wanted to make sure that her future wasn't limited by the predictions of others. Our daughter was able to "graduate" from speech therapy in the late fall of her 2nd grade. Today she is in 5th grade, reads at a high school level, loves math and social studies. Wants to be a veterinarian and run an animal rescue center.

My wife was a special education director. She dismissed numerous students from services. The system likes having these kids classified because they are job security for many people in the system. One of her former students has a doctorate in microbiology and designed the zero gravity vegetable farm on the international space station.
