I'm in WaCo, close to Aroostook. I hunt, fish, grow, raise and wild harvest about 90 percent of our food. Now that we're empty nesters it doesn't take long to fill freezers, jars and the cold cellar. Our soil is acidic so I add lime in the fall. There's always a compost bin going. There are simple ways to improve the soil. One section needed more organic matter so I planted forage radishes. The tap roots help break up hard soil, die, leave holes for water and plant debris, and feed the soil.

We jump between 4/5. There are pears, plums, apples, a peach (too young to produce), and hazelnuts in the orchard. You can be as self-sufficient as you want and have the skills to be in either county.

Self sufficiency is becoming huge in our nation. As a singer said, "I was country when country wasn't cool." Those who are prepared for the adjustment will prosper. Those who are unprepared will simply not make it. A Mainer named Charles E. MacArthur wrote a book called "The Adjustment". There is much practical wisdom in the book and it has some entertainment value, even if you don't buy into the fact that we are going to have an adjustment.

The book has become a cult classic. If you are incredibly lucky you might find one at a yard sale or on the shelf in the lobby at a Hannaford supermarket. You can find one at Amazon.com today for $199. (No, that is not a misprint.)

The book could save your life. Of course you could buy "Unintended Consequences" by John Ross if you can find one. They go for $750 at gun shows. It can save your life too.

A few of the reviewers liken "Unintended Consequences" to "The Turner Diaries" from an elemental perspective. That's something to be proud of. Must be some pretty big suckers at gun shows, because you can get it on Amazon for less than $30.00.
