Amazing. I had never even heard of Lyme disease when I was a kid.

There simply was no tick problem like there is today in that state.

Only time I ran into it was in Virginia... We use to use Frontline for the dogs then, and one of my dogs got it. Ended up with two more relapses over his life time. We switched after his case to K9 advantix, as it also repells the ticks to start with.

Lyme comes from the neonate ticks eating mouse urine/poop pellets. Typically not common in colder states, but it does occur sometimes. Only person I ever heard about in Maine getting it, they got it as they also had livestock- Llamas to be percise, and the feed was the source of it....

Lyme is much more common than it used to be in Maine, especially along the coast and in the southern part of the state. Even inland 30-50 miles ticks are pretty common. For example, it is not unusual for someone in Bangor to pick up ticks in the yard and end up with Lyme. Take precautions.

This information is very inaccurate. Maine is a cold state and has a huge number of people who have Lyme. Please read up on Lyme.

I suggest that you stay away from Mount Desert island. More than 1/2 of the full time population has been infected.

Lyme disease cases peaked the 'all time' record for Maine in 2016, with 1,464 cases.

That beat the previous high of 1,410 reported in 2014.

Lyme cases dipped slightly to 1,210 in 2015 before 'skyrocketing' in 2016.

Lyme cases in Maine rose to another record in 2016 - Portland Press Herald

Set within a state population of 1.3Million we are NOT being decimated with Lyme. That would require 130,000 cases, slightly more than the 1,464 cases of 2016.

MDI has a population of roughly 10,000. If every new case of lyme were all people living in MDI that would bring the incidence up to 10% of the MDI population.

Apparently you don't have chronic Lyme. As a sufferer of this disease, I can assure you that the statistics are just that. Most of those who get the disease are tourists who report it somewhere else. On MDI, everyone I know has been bitten at least once, and has been on doxy multiple times for it.

Last summer the Rite aid in Downtown Bar Harbor was writing 4-6 prescriptions for Doxycycline a day. and that's just one of many drug stores.

The discussion here is by people who know very little about Lyme Disease.

The use of Doxycycline has many uses as similar to Amoxi, but more easy on the stomach. Also good for infections that come from sunburns etc.

https://www.drugs.com/doxycycline.html

Doxycycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as acne, urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, eye infections, gonorrhea, chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and others.

Doxycycline is also used to treat blemishes, bumps, and acne-like lesions caused by rosacea.

While it's hard to imagine that 50% of people on MDI have had Lyme, it is a real problem in certain areas of the state. Considering that a large portion of the cases come from along the coast, for those areas, 1000+ cases is a lot. For a state with a small population, 1500 cases per year is significant; and it is pretty much understood that there are really more cases than that. Think about the number of cases over a 10 year period, and consider that most of those cases will occur in a concentrated area, and it becomes clear that Lyme is a real concern in parts of Maine. Your risk is actually quite significant if you live, work, or play in certain areas.
