I like exploring route 1 from freeport north. Bath has a nice shipbuilding museum, and easy access to Popham Beach and Reid State park - both beautiful sandy beaches but not busy like old ordhard beach.

I usually skip wiscasset - too much congestion. There are MANY antique shops and unique shops on route 1 all the way to Ellsworth. Visit the new hancock-waldo bridge. It has towers you can go up in and see for miles. Also fort knox is right next to it and a good explore.

Further up route 1, but I forget where, is Perrys Nut House - a shop with many wierd and unusual gifts. Also the State Prison in thomaston has a shop that sells the wood products the prisoners make - some of it very nice.

Also, down east on route 1 heading toward houlton is a rest area called "the million dolalr view". I stumbled upon it a few years ago on my motorcycle. It has a view toward the west of mt. katahdin. We arrived as the sun was setting behind the mountain - WOW. I think it was in danforth.

I don't believe Perry's Nut House is anything special anymore.

Mount Battie and Mount Megunticook are great climbs (or you can drive up Mt. Battie) in Camden. There is also good swimming at Megunticook Lake.

I second down East also, Cobscook is very nice, two weeks ago about one third of all spots where taken, cant beat the scenery way up there. Couple of new eating places in Lubec makes it even more interesting. Its way up though, but Maine coast at a budget, supernice people .
