Hi, I am looking to relocate from Southeastern Massachusetts hopefully in the near future. It has been a long process with my looking at all areas of this great State. Mostly I have looked at properties in central Maine (Newport, Palmyra, Saint Albans, Pittsfield, Plymouth, Monroe, Jackson) and the midcoast (Waldoboro, Dresden, Cushing). It definitely seems that you can get more for your money the further north you go and I have seen some beautiful older farmhouses with great barns for my outside family members but I seem to be drawn to the midcoast more. My husband has family in Rockland,. He was born there. And I had family in Georgetown years ago who we used to visit every summer so it probably is familiarity that is drawing me in this direction. Can anyone tell me about Dresden and Waldoboro, most interested in Dresden. There is a property there that has the land and barn for the horses and a relatively newer house, just that the house would need some work since it was set up more as a business property (office on first floor and one bedroom apartment on second floor - we are a family of 3). Even so, it just feels right. How are the high schools in the area? My daughter will be a sophomore next year. Thank you all for reading this lengthy post. Any info on the Dresden area will be helpful.

I dont have any School Info on Dresden ..but I used to live in Bath and Have been to Dresden ,Waldoboro, and Georgetown.. As I remember them there wasnt much difference ...all were very low population and very Rural... except Georgetown was closer to the Water (I think Reid State Park/ Beach ) was close to or part of Georgetown. I remember eating Pizza at a General Store in Dresden and going to a Fleamarket type Barn in Waldoboro (I think it was called Elmer's Barn)... I'm not sure but I would imagine Kids from Dresden and Waldoboro probably go to School in Wiscasset (or possibly Bath). I dont mean for it to Sound Negative but they are all just so rural that there doesnt seem like a lot to talk about.. If you like life in the Very Slow Lane...lots of Nature, Coastal Water, Fishing ,Boating... these places are perfect... I dont like the Big Cities but I like places with a little more excitement.

Thank you for the information. Yes, Reid State Park is in Georgetown, It has to be one of my favorite places to go. Lots of memories from when I was a child and newer ones with my daughter. As far as rural, I guess I don't mind it as long as there is a supermarket and walmart type store in the vicinity. The other area I was looking at was Palmyra Newport area. That seemed even more rural. Maybe too rural. Or maybe it was just more northerly than I want to go along with not having a connection to the arera as I do with Georgetown area. Too bad because there was the cutest little victorian farmhouse that I love up in Palmyra. Do you know anything about that town?

Waldoboro is very rural and peaceful....I believe the kids go to Medomak Valley High School which is supposed to be pretty good. (I don't have kids, so not an expert on this). There are no supermarkets in the town, but Damariscotta has a big one. The only Walmarts are in Augusta or Rockland, at least a half hour drive...big controversy recently as Walmart wanted to build along Rt 1 in Damariscotta and the town voted them down by implenting a size restriction cap....all the surrounding towns (Waldoboro, Newcastle, Edgecomb, etc) also voted in size caps...I guess people don't want any big box type stores there, which is nice in theory but does make for a very long drive on rural roads for shopping.

Thank you all for the information. I am coming up for another trip tomorrow to look at Dresden again. It is so nerve racking, wondering if you are choosing the right home, school system, area . . . Well, just have to see what transpires. Thanks again!

I hope it works out well for you... Lots of Beautiful Places in Maine especially along the Coast... and Dresden is close enough to Bath/Brunswick, Portland, Lewiston/Auburn , Augusta and Bangor that you can find entertainment... If you dont mind long cold winters and life in the very slow lane then Maine has a lot of other good points to enjoy... nature, low crime and low population.
