Today, when we went into Ellsworth Dep Motor Veh, on the way back we passed a white Escalade with a HIRE license and the number/letter combination was simply a capital "A".

Who could that have been?

Is this a quiz?

I even did a search for "hire" license plate. Nada, unless you're talking about livery.

So, some rich or famous person? Or a politician?

It wasn't limo. But the question is how does one get a license plate that only has one letter and that letter is the first one in the alphabet. I assumed if you see one number and the number is the first number, then its LePage's car. But what about the first letter.

Easy- space is a letter. And one does not have to fill all the spaces...
Personalized plates can come in any form as long as the plate is available.

According to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles website PC license plates may have up to 7 characters plus one space or dash. 8 Characters do not fit. License plate A would fit that criteria, and a search shows it is taken.

It works on most if not all classes.

Sorry, Plate Number: A with class code Passenger (Passenger) is unavailable. Please try another selection.
Note it says unavailable, not error.

A new vehicle with a two-digit license plate is often parked in front of my building. It belongs to the Maine 'Secretary of State'.

One of our tenants hosted a Christmas party and invited us to attend, we met him at the party.
