This thread brings to mind a poem I wrote years ago, after shoveling out from one big storm on a cold day.
I don't recall much of it, but the last two lines were:

"As those who got wise say--
don't have a long drive way."

I should have taken my own advice.....lol

yeah.... I’m too old to shovel anymore. I got a driveway so that I can walk behind Cubby.

That’s in the center of the village of BH, not in the town in the outskirts. The village has all that asphalt to absorb the heat and radiate it out. Its not realistic.

I just got one of those Toro single staged for the porch. We got tired of shoveling the porch. And of course, its always nice to have a back up even if its small.

Everyone should remember to spray aerosol silicone on the inside of the areas that snow touches on the blower. Snow won’t stick, and it will make it easier for the unit to move the snow.

Also it worthwhile to run the blower after being done and make sure than none of the stage 2 blades are touching the bottom part of the unit. That happened last year. The snow turned to water and froze it to the housing. Every time I started the blower part the unit stalled until I freed stage 2.

My neighbor who runs the snow plow business got a snow thrower for the front of one of his trucks. I suspect it will increase the speed of his work dramatically and leave the driveways really clear when he’s done.

I hate it when the facts get in the way of a good argument.

Yeah....OH Cr@p as they say when an airplane is on its way down.

We also live on what is always the coldest part of the island. The snow at our house is always the last to melt. We wear sweaters in the summer to shop in Ellsworth, and get there only to find people in shorts and t-shirts.

So if the predictions is for 22deg F, we know that our thermometers will say its 16. We keep getting new ones, but as soon as we set them up at our house, they go with the same as the others.

OK... maybe we’ll get blow-able snow. Intellicast says 5-8 for Bar Harbor. Caribou is talking about 5 inches. That would be enough to get the snow blowers going. I leaf blew the driveway today so no stick get caught in the machines. And I started them both an ran them for 5 minutes, so they are ready to go. I practiced using the auto turning feature on the big one---when I was holding on for dear life in the rutted driveway, I couldn’t get the turning feature to work.

Amounts more than 2 inches? I believe that when I see it.

I do not blow the first snow fall. I pack it down. It will go to form a base layer. Without a solid base layer my blower will gouge my driveway.

This is a big storm headed your way. Here in the Blue Ridge so far 7 inches and still snowing. Back to Maine day after Christmas. In 18 months I plan to live there only.
Things I did to prepare for winter in Maine this year:
Cut, split and stacked 6 cords wood
Installed two heat pumps
Replaced every window in the house
Uncovered earth for it to “season” for my new garage I’m constructing next summer
I am looking for a good used Fischer plow and sander but no hard for the winter of ‘19 when I am a full time resident. I own a kubota B series tractor and am exploring the price of purchasing a cab and snow blower as opposed to just buying a new one so equipped.i don’t want a rear mounted one as I no longer have a neck due to jumping out of C-130’s and “hop and pops” from helicopters in my youth.

I cannot wait to not have to deal with the traffic related to ex-pat New Yorkers moved south. I drove through Wilmington, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Winston Salem yesterday and would have preferred a trip to the dentist for a root canal. All done working (3rd time) June 30th 2019. I don’t care if I have to eat ramen noodles and cat food.

I’m hoping for a good snow cover so I can burn my brush piles as it was way to dry this summer.
