With all the problems brought on by gas and oil prices, Maine roads in the worst condition they have been in in years, school consolidation causing friction among towns,Government spending out of control, and a myriad of REAL problems it's nice to know the Legislature and Governor can get together to pass EMERGENCY legislation to keep us all safe. MaineToday.com | News Update: Maine has nation's first novelty lighter ban
Passed in EMERGENCY session a bill to ban the sale of novelty lighters in Maine. I know I'll sleep better at night! Why just last summer, according to the story, a Maine child was injured when playing with a lighter that resembled a toy baseball bat in a store! (Parents?). Are these people for real??? They actually spend time on crap like this?? This is an issue worthy of emergency legislation??? Is it any wonder why NOTHING gets done in this State?

You are dead on with your thoughts. I completely agree the legislature is out of control.

I would love to move, but family commitments prevent it.

I don't want to move and I really like the state overall but COME ON folks can you spend some time fixing the things that need fixing instead of jerking around with lighter bans? They made me just as mad about 15 years ago when they spent time on a law against the release of helium balloons for fear of choking sea turtles when they landed. They really need to get a direction here....unfortunately our useless Governor isn't much of a leader.

You are thinking that the issue of a state legislature that is completely bonkers, is a Maine only issue?

I would seriously disagree.

Professional career politicians are the problem, and they are in office in every state.

One of the things that makes Maine 'better' is that our taxes tend to be so much lower.

Yes folks...

The same legislature that thought it a good idea to re-introduce Caribou into the Great North Woods, some years back. I think they followed one another off the Knife Edge, or something like that.

Anyhow, if Cali, NY or MA don't think of it first, Maine will follow! By the way, flavored ciggs and cigars are coming off the market this year. Right after removal of the "Larry the Cable Guy" lighters.

Geeesss!!!!!
