Yes, in some parts of Maine more than others. They're not an issue on the coast like they are inland. They hatch in running water. I use a Thermacell for mosquitoes and black flies so that I can enjoy being outside. They emerge as early as April, die down for the most part over the summer, and another species emerges in the fall. There are approximately 40 species of black flies.

Maine definitely has black flies! Mother's Day to Father's Day give or take is loosely the time period when you can't realistically spend time out doors where I live. They are swarming and biting big time. I LOVE Maine, but bugs are a big reality here. Black flies, mosquitoes, ticks, brown tailed moths.... I live 15 minutes from the ocean on a lake.
