I hope the real ID would be optional in Maine... in my (to be former, starting 2020) state, I just rolled back to regular DL from Real ID one that I had (which was to expire) because of requirements nightmare. Let's just say they made it impossible to receive one in a PO Box or PMB/private service mailbox, while saying all this was due to a federal requirement. You had to not only prove current residential address with 2 different documents (not possible to do address change or have recent one done), you had to prove mailbox address in the same manner (not really possible to use any recently opened mailbox, and no, simply pieces of addressed mail won't do) - all this while I had their licenses and real ID for a total of 15 years by now. It's a joke. For regular DL renewal one didn't even need to "prove" address. Over the phone they even told me I can't rollback to regular DL and will be stuck with Real ID renewal, but luckily, in-person it was different. It's been much easer to renew US passport/card than process Real ID.
