What can you tell me about the Portland Islands? Which island(s) are recommended for a mostly year-round small cottage (e.g., convenience with decent grocery stores on the island)?

Take a look at Long Island, Maine. It's become one of our favorites to visit. It never seems to get crowded and there's a beautiful beach on the opposite side of the Island from where the fairy drops you off. We periodically look at houses/cottages for sale on the island the few we've seen seem reasonable in price and if we had the extra income we would own one but the timing hasn't been right yet.

Peaks Island is the closest to Portland, has the most ferry service, the largest summer and year round population and the most "amenities".

Before you drop hundreds of thousands of dollars on a cottage, how about spending $200 on a plane ticket to visit the islands.

Peaks has a convenience store that is bigger than average, but limited selection. None have a grocery store.

Island life is something very different. You need to haul everything over from the main land.

I have only been to Peaks Island. It's very pretty, but a bit crowded for my tastes. Lots of houses crammed into a little space.
