Camps are taxed the same but are assessed differently. There's a difference.

I'll just start by saying you don't live yearround in a camp, although you could. It's not a Maine thing, it's a rural thing. You have a fishing camp, a hunting camp or just a house/cabin by a pond or lake you and your family spend weekends. Most folks who own a camp also have a house.

If it has electricity, running hot water, cable tv, phone, indoor plumbing including bathroom then it's more a vacation home than a camp.

Do they expect more from the word :camp?

I wondered that too.
When we bought our house we knew it was the owners "camp" meaning just what you said, they lived in it for a short time through out the year.. "But does that mean the windows and insulation isn't as it is in a "house".

We found out that our windows are anderson but "not" insulated. The house it self is well insulated but our windows are a low grade of Andersons that "SOme Dayyy will have to dig in the pocket and replace them all.

A camp, generally, is not meant for permenant occupation but is closed up when not in use.

Default camp vs home

A camp may be winterized or not. Some houses, if not in great shape, may be listed as a camp so the prospective buyer isn't expecting too much; a place an outsider might consider adiquit as a hunting camp.
