Lived in maine all my life, but yesterday was the first time I've been on a schooner..... for a 2 hour ride... in penobscot bay
there are many schooners to choose from ...some are over 100ft in length and over 100 yrs old.. they have rentals all summer and into the fall...
we had an awesome time!!
even though it was windy 20 knots and good size waves..... what an adventure!! you even get to help them raise the sails if you want to or steer the ship... and the one we went on offered adult beverages.... if you wanted one..
we went out of camden ….they have free parking and the schooners are right there!!
definitely something I will do again....maybe next time do the sunset tour ..
Took the Rachael Jackson out of BH in the 90’s. Since taken the Margaret Todd twice, also from BH, since the RJ was sold to somebody in Florida. Still have the cup, though.
Maine built the Clipper ships. They were the fastest sailing ships in the world. After Lexington and Concord, the fastest ships in the world were Maine built packets. British men of war were slow and lumbering ships with many cannons. Packets had four cannons, two on the bow and two on the stern. They were never intended to get near the broadside of a British man of war. The news of Lexington and Concord was sent to London on the Quero, a packet. It arrived three weeks before the British man of war. King George read about it in the newspaper. The Quero was long gone when the king read about his defeat.
Sounds like an excellent adventure, mainebrokerman. ... Interesting that you would mention free parking. I noticed that when I visited Camden in August. FREE PARKING is the way life should be at least in Maine. I think we should support towns and cities that offer free parking. That's what I have been doing this summer. Been on one out of Bar Harbor twice when parking was free. The two-hour trip was excellent and served as an appetizer to get me thinking about a longer trip. There are schooner trips out of other Maine ports--Camden comes to mind first--that last several days (also shorter, few hours option). Add Boothbay Harbor, Rockland
Mother's family had several sea captains and father's family had at least one who ran from Penbay to Rio bringing ice down and molasses and rum back. That's why I sail.
Need to go down to Searsport and track some of the activities and see what I can find at the Marine Museum.
Lived in Biddeford briefly when going to attend UNE in '01. We walked thru Biddeford (actually we lived in Saco) but walked thru both at nites & no probs other than punky kids mouthing off. This tho before even 9/11 so things may be diff now, dunno.
