People are realizing that you can ride your snowmobile 3 to 4 moths a year, but you can ride the thousands of miles of ATV trails 8 to 9 months a year. This is a waffle alert with a bonus.

Waffles for breakfast in Springfield and BBQ in Mattawamkeag for lunch. Won't need supper. ATVs are welcome at both events.

The Mattawamkeag BBQ kicks off at 1 PM at Mattawamkeag Wilderness Park.

I was just thinking about an atv instead of a snow sled.
I held off getting a sled last winter.
My budget is $2k. Is it possible to get a good running atv?

Definitely. I think you can get an old one that runs okay for half that price.

I have a Ranger 900 XP. I love it. Like NMLM states, I get more bang for my buck by longer utilization, plus it has a HEATER!

That's great.....really like that place. Sat out on the deck overlooking the river a couple summers ago, watching a bald eagle fly around.....

Sounds expensive. Can you drive it in snow?

"So i might even be able to get both, atv and a sled for 2k. Whooppee."

Yes. Buy them from an old guy who can no longer enjoy riding. Don't buy one from a kid who likes to see how far he can fly either machine.

And, Yes you can drive a Ranger 900 XP in snow, in the woods you own, your fields and on lakes for ice fishing. You can NOT ride your Ranger 900 XP on snowmobile trails in Maine. However, you can ride ATVs on snowmobile trails in New Brunswick. Snowmobile and ATV clubs in New Brunswick get along well with each other.

In Maine, Snowmobile clubs were here first. They developed their own trail systems over several decades. They don't want ATV people on their trails and the "authorities" agree - so far. ATV riders bring more money into Maine than snowmobiles do. Some accommodation is necessary because snowmobile trails often cross swamps. ATVs cannot cross swamps because many swamps would be damaged by ATVs.

Nearly all snowmobile and ATV trails are outside that 50 mile radius from Portland City Hall. The problem is that less than half of our legislature comes from there, so the people who benefit most from snowmobile and ATV spending will not be the ones who decide how the new rules will be written.

The entire system depends on Maine landowners. They are the ones who allow ATV and snowmobile use on their land. It is up to everybody to keep landowners happy; ATV riders, snowmobilers and legislators.

Not bad if you use it for chores as well as fun. Like NMLM says it can go in the snow. I use it on my land in the winter to get to the wood pile as my tractor doesn’t have a cap. They quit making the 900 last year and make a 1000XP. Look around for a good used one.
