I will be moving from GA to ME next week. Not really Augusta but that's close and where I'm going, Richmond, is of 295. From a quick look so far it seems like take 85 then get on 95 around Richmond, VA. Then after crossing the Hudson River I guess into NY take 9A Cross Country Pkwy? which becomes? 15 Hutchinson River Pkwy? then Merritt Pkwy? then Wilbur Cross Pkwy? Then that becomes 91 for a while then take 84 around Hartford which becomes 90 Mass turnpike around Sturbridge then 290 around Auburn then 495 around Marlborough which joins back to 95 around Salisbury then finally!!! get on 295 around Sarborough. Has anyone done this trip and does all that sound right if so? I'm going by the map here:

Thank you for any help or suggestions!

David

Depends on the time of year. I always used to leave Kennesaw on I75 to I40 near Knoxville. Then I81 to Scranton Pa and switch to I84 to the Mass Pike. Then take I295 in Auburn Mass to I495 toward NH. Took me 2 days to get home which is 4 hours east of Augusta. You can probably save a bit of time cutting Rt 20 from Buford to I75. Hope this link works:

But that's just me. I like the Va to Pa mountain ride.

It looks like that could cut out a bunch of garbage around NYC and maybe fewer tolls overall?

A lot less tolls. If I remember right only 4 (NY Hudson River bridge through to Gardner). You'd only on the Mass Pike for 10 miles more or less then I295. I think it's still around $0.50. Plus it cuts out DC (like your original route), NYC, and the Connecticut Crosses etc. I go the same when we go to S.C. & pick up I77 through NC. I77 is another gorgeous ride.

Do you know about skipping the toll in Portland going onto I295? Go past that exit to the next one (exit 45). You by-pass the toll booth onto 295 that way. Save a buck.

When I come up or go down to PA, I avoid as much of the metro New York as possible. I come up 287 in NJ, and stay on it as it turn into 87 the New York State Thruway. I get on 787 north in Albany and then right on Rt 2 to go across Mass. I connect to 495 pretty far north. It seems like its longer but it not. The time you lose in traffic on 95 and associated roads, plus the aggravation of that traffic is worth it.

I agree with most of Retiredtinbenders route with the exception I avoid connect-the-dots like the plague. I go up the NY state throughway(I-87) off I-84 to right before Albany and get on I-90 which becomes the Mass Pike in about 20 miles. The GPS says it’s 15 minutes longer however Hartford has 2 interstate highways that merge in downtown which is always a cluster. I’d rather be moving than sitting still. There is a HOV lane on 84 but nowhere it is needed most. Now if you are coming through there in the middle of the night that is the way to go.

I have friends and relatives in NC a short distance off I-85. I have driven both south and north Maine to NC, NC to Maine at least 30 times. I've tried various routes. To me, the best thing to do is take I-85 to I-95 in Petersburg, VA. Remember to follow the NJ Turnpike signs when entering NJ. Plan the trip to go through NYC between midnight and 3 a.m. and stay on I-95 all the way to Maine. That is my favorite way to go. I don't care about the tolls. I like this route. People seem fearful of driving through NYC. I wouldn't want to live there and I've made the mistake of dealing with heavy traffic through there. It's all about timing. The lights of NYC are beautiful between midnight and 3 a.m. and traffic is light. Pay attention and follow the signs for I95. If you've never visited the Statue of Liberty, there is easy access to the ferry terminal at Liberty State Park from NJ Turnpike Exit 14B.

No doubt others will disagree and have their own favorite routes. If you don't have an EZ Pass, get one. You don't have to buy a Maine EZPass, but why would you want one from any other state. Having an EZPass will expedite passing through toll booths. https://ezpassmaineturnpike.com/EZPass/NewAccount.do Since you are leaving soon, maybe you could call EZPass and get them to ExpressMail it to you. Another option... There are places (I'm thinking NJ and Delaware, perhaps Maryland) along I95 to buy an EZPass but it won't say Maine on it. It will have the name of some other state.

I already stated I've tried several routes. Taking I77 through NC, VA, etc. or I81 through VA, PA and beyond added 3 hours to my trip. I do not recommend it at all. ... the novelty of the mountains wore off--wasn't worth the additional 3 hours. I can now tell people I've been through all those mountains. lol ... Hillsville, VA, Skyline Drive, Pocanos, etc. I have family members who are way to concerned with tolls so they drive sometimes hours out of their way to avoid the tolls and spend more on gas. To each his own.
