I live on the border and the toyota dealership is in NH is the closest and easiest method of obtaining an inspection. Is a NH inspection ok on a maine plated and registered vehicle?

No, it must be inspected in Maine.

And it's a "NH" state inspection, not a Maine??? I could be wrong, but that don't sound right at all. Unless the vehicle was previously registered in NH and you haven't yet registered it in ME, I believe you wasted your money and will end up forking it over to ME again.

After talking to 3 or 4 different shops this morning it looks like Maine recognizes nh inspections fine. But they cost more in NH and have emissions where Maine doesn't.

Well, looks like maybe you are right if you scroll down to "ME Out-of-State & Military Vehicle Inspections":

Certainly good to know, although like you said yes you are paying extra for the emissions (which btw you are still required to have if you reside in Cumberland County).
