Teaching in Maine schools is very different. In the smaller town and cities classes are smaller as in 6-8 students in some areas. The pay however is only about 2/3rds of what you would make in many states. The Pension offset is a real deterrent to single people. Married people with both of them in the school system will do okay, but a single person, is going to find it pretty rough if they teach to the full retirement age. Many teachers accept jobs only to resign within a few weeks or at the last minute no shows. Benefits are very good in some areas, and not so good in the others. Home town people fill jobs first, and then people from other areas. If you want to take the risk, move first, and apply as a resident of the area. They do like to keep the money local because local small businesses need the people. Some people come to areas of Maine and can't find a suitable rental. Many rentals are not up to what people from other areas might be used to. Ma ine in some areas uses paraprofessionals as teachers. The methods course you have to have is ESE in the Regular Classroom. It can be completed online, and the district will repay you the tuition, after successful completion of the course.

Most people who move to Maine want to be on the coast between Kittery and Acadia lol. Have you contacted the Maine teacher certification office and applied? Probably should do that to see how many hoops you'll have to jump through to be certified. Depending on your area of expertise (certification) and years experience, there may be more or fewer opportunities. The salaries vary considerably from one school system to another. There seems to be a shortage of subs and Ed Techs.
