This is great information. Sounds like there may be a market for a coffee shop. As I said earlier in the thread, we're still planning and being careful about how this COVID situation shakes out in 2021 -- I know Maine is a lot less effected than say Massachusetts but I really don't want to deal with question marks around local/Canadian/Tourist revenue. 2020 was pretty much a lost year for 2 of my other businesses due to shut downs/lower traffic and I'm approaching this very cautiously.

Coffee Shop/Bakery
Health Food Store
'Healthier' Diner
A few specialty ideas (not disclosing) that my friend has come up with

If you think of any others, they would be much appreciated!

It was always full when I went there. To be honest it’s been like a ghost town since the border closed around here. Good luck and let us know what you decide. If you have to remodel don’t use any local contractors. Get them from Machias. They don’t come to work, don’t finish what you pay them for. Building contracts aren’t worth the paper they are written on in Maine. Basically they can drive one nail and keep your money. I have learned carpentry from YouTube.
Thank you so much! I know the Canadian border closing has had a significant impact. I am very curious about your comment regarding contractors -- I will definitely need them for remodeling the space to make sure that it meets the business needs. Do you have any recommendations for contractors in Machias or elsewhere? I'd like to make sure that I can get the job done. I'm surprised and disappointed to hear about your experience.

To the OP, have you ever watched Schitt's Creek?
That's a good point. Do you have any specific advice? It seems like their is something Maine specific that I should be aware of? I am just trying to invest in the local economy, helping out a good friend and looking for a fair profit - If there are Maine specific areas of concern that I need to keep in mind, please do share. My thouught would be that due to the small town/community feel, people would know each other and contractors and other professionals that swindle people would be identified very quickly and not get additional business. Maybe, I'm wrong?

I have never watched Schitt's Creek -- should I watch it?

Sorry to be a bit off topic; I was just reading about plans to build a new road/rail bridge to Eastport and was wondering when the old toll bridge on its namesake road was dismantled? Any info is most appreciated.

It wasn't dismantled; the tide took it out. I want to say late 1950s +/-. My understanding is that it was never really well maintained. Quite a few auto accidents didn't help it. As far as a new road/rail bridge, the Port brings this out every few years to dust it off. It would be far too expensive even with Fed/State help. And the Port is in hard shape with COVID and shipping problems. But if anyone can pull this off this Port Manager can. IMHO.

Thanks. I know Meacher bought a lot of the former railroad property and I can't see a new rail line coming thru Eastport on any alignment.
