so this year i come up with a plan.i took a old garage door opener and built a stand for it to lay flat .then i took and built trolly to ride on the rail of the opener.i then attached a scare crow to it.took an old motion sensor from a broken light and hooked it up.set it up in the garden and it works great.
when it comes on it travel's back and forth to scare off wold be intruders.
it even works on small birds.
Wow that is great. Your an inventer.
I've had problems with deer. They seem to really like the tulips just befor
there ready to bloom. But my big problem is ants! My lot is full of oak
trees so I'm sure that's a lot to do with it,makes the soil acidic.i'd love
any ideas...these ants are taking over. Flower girl

I have a neighbor who bought a setup a few years ago that hooked up a sprinkler with a motion detector. He gave it to his wife for Mother's day and she was thrilled. The deer get scared everytime they set the thing off. My neighbors grew up farmkids and already knew that a fence was not the answer. If he had seen the scarecrow I'm sure he would have built a setup for himself.
I use Bonide Hot Pepper Wax to deter the deer in my yard. I used to make a spray by simmering hot peppers, cayenne and hot sauce, in other words, whatever I could lay my hands on at the time. It worked really well, as does sprinkling the garden with ground red pepper from a giant economy sized bottle, but it got to be a pain, the stuff washed off when it rained and the liquid I made would clog up the sprayhead every so often. Red pepper will also keep dogs out of the yard and cats from using your mulch as a litterbox.
I had a problem with ants in my front garden too, especially since they would find their way into the house. I started using stuff like Ortho Home Defense to form a perimeter around my house. One year I got into this frenzy because the ants had brought over aphids that just about killed my Alberta spruce, AGAIN. When I decided to dig the almost dead shrub out I found that the ground beneath it was moving wildly full of little ants so in a fury I sprayed House and Garden ant killer all over the area. The next day I took a chance and planted some annuals there and they didn't seem to mind the ant killer one bit. They grew very happily, so the next year I sprayed the Home Defense stuff all over my walks and in the front garden where the ants always hung out. last year no ants were seen, and the flowers and shrubs grew happily ant free.
At another house I had a backyard lawn that was just a mess of weeds and anthills. We couldn't afford to redo the yard, so in desperation I bought a few cans of Home and Garden bug killer and walked backwards spraying the ground to kill the ants. It worked, and after a few weeks my grass started to grow choking out the weeds and the next year I had lovely soft grass to walk on.

but other than that i havent seen any birds or deer in the garden .
