What do you think? I'm all for honoring veterans but Maine first and foremost is an economy which relies heavily on natural beauty. Not sure if I would be able to see the thing 20 miles away, but I would hope not.

Wow, first I've heard of it. I don't know if I lived in the area if I'd want it, but I'd definitely visit it.

The navy towers in Cutler are over 900 feet high.

It's his land and he should do as he pleases, but I'm not sure I'd want it in my view. I wonder about a loud snap when wind whips the fabric.

It's going to cost $1b. I can't imagine it'll ever get built. I would definitely not want it in my neighborhood but if I were in the area I'd surely stop to see it.

This must be a really bad April Fool's joke. The whole idea of this flag is bogus, as will soon become evident in this thread and in Maine. According to these guys, patriotism, freedom, and honoring veterans are "nonpartisan" and will "unify all Americans." Recent history tells us that nothing could be further from the truth. The list of good things that Maine could do with a billion dollars is endless. Destroying the landscape with this monstrosity is not one of them.

I agree. Though supposedly it will be funded by private donations. Who knows? I rather scale this massive idea down by 1000% and see what happens. Multiple museums, an observation deck, etc. It seems a little nuts.

But Columbia Falls residents can nix it - maybe - by voting against the annexation of the land.

Lots of nutty ideas coming left and right lately in Washington County - massive hatcheries, shooting off rockets, flagpoles...

I would much rather see the annual Hiram Maxim machine gun shoot start up again, in Dover-Foxcroft.

While I am not from Maine, I have visited Maine and the rest of Northern New England quite frequently. What impresses me, and many other visitors, is the lack of light pollution, bill boards and other eyesores.

I think this will change the character of the views and will have an impact on tourism. I live seeing New England homes, decorated in summer with bunting and the American flag - but a HUGE American flag like that seems like patriotic overreach.

I love the quiet and authentic patriotism of New England. This seems too commercial, and it could potentially distract people. I am also for honoring veterans, but I think it's best done privately.
