I remember my 8th grade Math teacher telling the class that he lived in Pergatory, Maine.

Really??? Where are you getting that? I have to admit: I'm very skeptical about that.

Check out Brunswick's crime rate here: Brunswick, Maine (ME) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders

Compared to Lewiston's here:
Lewiston, Maine (ME) Detailed Profile - relocation, real estate, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, news, sex offenders

Or Saco's:

Yep. I don't know that Maine really has a truly "dangerous" town anywhere. There are places less nice than others, and most of the larger towns have a neighborhood or two where I'd be less than thrilled to live. But for the most part Maine really is the way life should be.

Yeah, I'm still skeptical. I know Brunswick is no utopia, but we've lived here almost a year now, we've been very active in the schools, and I've even gotten to know a few cops. There is a neighborhood or two where I wouldn't buy a house, but there isn't any neighborhood in town where I'd be afraid to walk alone.
*This post was what I was worried about if I posted my experience with an area I lived in.

I suppose the best thing to do is just say,
" There are a few area's in Maine that "are found to be less favorable to some then others", but other all Maine is truly...
"The way life should be."

I don't like liver, doesn't mean it should be forgotten as a meal all together because I know alot of people enjoy it.
It's not my place to say "eew", so i left it alone.

It seems like Portland is the most unsafe city in the state according to crime rate comparisons?

Hmm,

highest population density = highest crime

Who could have anticipated that?

IMHO, that is the most utterly ridiculous statement I've ever read.

"It seems like Portland is the most unsafe city in the state according to crime rate comparisons?"

Do more homework!
Lewistons crime rate is much higher. We can all gather stats from different sites. Unless you have lived/ worked there or in that area, it's all moot.
I'd much rather live/ work in the Portland area than Lewiston.

just my 2 cents.

I have not been into the interior of Lewiston, nor have I ever visited the interior of Portland.

It is my understanding that recently Lewiston has recently gone through a growth 'spurt' of immigrants.

So it is possible that Lewiston is currently experiencing a higher crime rate, as a momentary phenomenon.

I tend to avoid cities, as it has been my observation that high-densities draw higher levels of crime.

Whatever, the crime rate growth in Lewiston occurred long before the growth "spurt" of immigrants in that city. That spurt by the way, started several years ago. I've worked in both cities, I felt safer in Portland than I did Lewiston.

Sorry Cessna, just my opinion. I also have close friends that both live AND work in that city. They've been there for well over 20 yrs. There are far more neighborhoods in Lewiston than Portland that I'd feel more in danger.

An "understanding of" is far different than living / working there.

I would think twice about moving to Rumford, although I hear the smell is a lot less now.

Before I get beat up on this, yes I know that Rumford smell is due to the paper mill which is a positive for the economy by bringing jobs.

Actually highest population density is the best predictor of high crime no matter what cities you compare. A perfect predictor no? Best, yes. So not such a ridiculous statement.
