Hopefully my two cats won't mind an airplane ride. Its the only way to get them to NM.

Tried and True- traveled 5 hours with 4 cats and a dog. Only one cat had to be tranq'd. Whoever is the favorite person of the animal- sleep with the same t-shirt on for a week. Line the carrier with that t-shirt and medicate the animal if necessary. The smell of the favorite person is as comforting to a pet as the smell of Mommy is to a baby.

I know some people out there will say it is wrong to give your cat any drug etc, but when I moved just an hour away a few hrs ago he was so stressed out. He meowed the entire hour and messed in his carrier and he was covered in it by the time he arrived at his new home. I believe not giving him some type of drug to relax him would be cruel.

Baby Benedril is what I've heard works well. I save the xanax for me!

No mater what I choose, I can assure you that I do care for my pets. I'm not looking for the easiest way, I am looking for the best way. If I was looking for the easiest way, then he would have been gone when he was a very sick (and very expensive) kitten. If I didn't care for him I wouldn't be searching for advice.

I just gave you some rep for that post PMBird!

I have gotten some flack because we are not taking our old dog with us. I know the trip would kill her. She is old, her health has failed a great deal in the past 2 months. She has a harder time walking, despite meds for that; she has almost nonstop kidney infections, chronic constipation, and a few other things. The kindest thing we are doing is having her euthanized this week. We am not looking forward to it and we will miss her dearly. Heck, we'll cry like babies when we think of her. But when the quality of life is gone, a caring person will let them go. I'll sleep easier knowing she is no longer suffering, but playing on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge where she will forever be painfree.

I know what you are going through. Last October I had to have my 16yr old euthanized because he had a stroke and 2 yrs before that his 14yr old brother had to go because of illness. I know it's not easy, but it really is the best thing for them. I was a basketcase for a week and still (even writing this) have issues when I think of him.
