These "People From Away" are going to Maine because all the other states are full.

I talked to a Somalian and he complained about how hard it is to buy land in America, he said "in Somalia they just take it". I said "It's because we have laws that will prevent me from shooting you and taking your land".

Soooo ... back to this thread 12yrs later after I just got a couple of rep points. How's the situation in Portland & Lewiston with the bums and refugees? I can't imagine it's gotten any better with time. Still enabling them through taxpayer dollars with free handouts etc. ?

"These "People From Away" are going to Maine because all the other states are full."

Not true. The reason they choose Maine is that Maine pays them the most to come here. Simple as that.

The mill at Millinocket was built by Italian stone masons because there was no concrete in Maine until around 1930. They lived in "Little Italy". The neighborhood is still called Little Italy. Nearly all the etnic groups fully understand that they are Americans. It's OK to remember your heritage. My mother's family used to sing Silent Night in Norwegian every year.

I recently read an article about the 'homeless bus budget' the city of Bangor maintains. According to the article, any homeless person in Bangor may ask for a bus ticket to anywhere in the USA, the most popular bus ticket destination from Bangor is Santa Barbara.

Said ticket holder can ride down to Lowell, Mass and sell that Santa Barbara tiket. Then he goes to Portland, Maine. Does Bangor talk to Portland? Any guesses? Anybody?

I only check in once in awhile to dispel odious undercurrents. Here's a quote from a study done at UMO: "The data suggest that welfare benefits may be a macrostructural factor affecting some
Somalis’ decision to relocate to Maine; however, it is important to point out that this widespread
perception appears to be exaggerated in the media (and by "expert" pundits trying to garner support for their political bent - my comment) and other factors tend to be overlooked.
Although many secondary migrants do come from states with middle or low level benefits, such
as Georgia and Texas, many others come from states that actually offer equal or higher benefits
than Maine, including New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Minnesota.65
The data indicate
that a significant number of Somalis leaving Lewiston are headed to states with either lower
monthly benefits (Utah and Arizona) or harsher lifetime limits (Minnesota, Washington, and
Utah) than Maine."

But I understand that no matter what I say, whatever is repeated until it becomes "truth" echoes in the cranial reaches of the true followers. I'd get a kick out of it if someone said the Somalis have initiated their own "Safety Committees."
