In Maine, you are talking about the greater Portland area, which includes Falmouth; the greater Bangor area with its huge jetport; and the greater Mt Desert Island are, which includes Ellsworth, Bar Harbor and east to, oh,Gouldsboro. In Trenton, which lies between Ellsworth and the causeway leading onto Mt Desert Island, is a great hidden secret: Hancock County Airport.

Hancock County Airport is one of six (I think there are six now) airports in Maine with all weather approach and take off service (ILS). The ILS at Hancock County was installed when Nelson Rockefeller was vice president. The Rockefellers have homes on Mt. Desert Island, and he needed to get Air Force Two in and out on little to no warning, hence the installation of the ILS.

Today, Hancock County Airport has ten or so flights daily from Trenton to Boston. When I was developing some real estate in Ellsworth a while ago, I proved that it was possible to leave Ellsworth, have lunch in Los Angeles and be back in Boston in time to catch the late commuter flight back to Hancock County Airport.

Unfortunately it is not possible to fly to Portland unless you go to Boston, first. By commuter flight it is about an hour to Boston, but by road it is three to Portland. If going to Boston isn't your cup of tea, then it is about 25 miles to the airport in Bangor, with its much larger airport and air service facilities.

yes, some taxes are high,,,but property taxes for example, is subjective, depends where ,,what town you live in, for example, west gardiner (about an hr north of portland, has very low property taxes!!!
id recommend anyone thinking of moving here, to come up and visit for a while, drive thru many towns,,,also, if you are thinking of one particular area, to live, go on realtor.com print out the listings and drive by them (houses), see whats on the market,,for the prices.
