Oh, how I agree. One of the things I most miss is the "kibitzing" about the kitchen table. That's how I learned all about the history of the hardy souls of Maine. We used to visit neighbors and chat about the way it was when they were kids, and oh the hilarious stories! Of course, that was back when no one sued each other at the drop of a dime, so there were many "colorful local characters" who were harmless - yet provided fodder for the conversation.

Quite a few Maine libraries have copies, and if yours doesn't, you can borrow one through the Maine Statewide Catalog as long as you belong to any Maine library.

Thank you for that post - I'll be sure to check it out. Also, there's a book titled:

A Midwife's Tale: The Life of Martha Ballad, Based on Her Diary 1785-1812. She worked in the Hallowell area I believe (I read it a couple of years back).
