I plan on retiring in about 2 years. My wife and I are looking for somewhere up north that has low crime rates and something for early 50 somethings to do. Not skiing. (Lol) I was looking in the Richmond Maine area on the internet and it seems like a good place to live. Can anyone please let me know about this area? I would also like to know about the hospitals and doctors in this area. Thanks

i was just in richmond a couple days ago and know many folks that live there, its a nice town, that runs along the kennebec river. i believe the closest hospitals are in brunswick, and/or augusta.

the town of south gardiner is to the north and bowdoinham is to the south, and litchfield to the west, all nice small towns too

Hello, I used to live in Manassass area. like NMLM said, it's a small town along the kennebeck river. I do not know that there is anything about the town in particular the sets it apart...which may be a good thing...but it is a nice little town.

For good medical services other than Portland....Lewiston is about 30 min away and has a huge medical center including two hosipitals and plenty of supporting offices like cardiologists, neurologists ect. there are plenty of doctors in the area too.

What made you pick Richmond??

Richmond is a nice quiet little town. I have an old home brewing friend that has lived there for many years and loves the place. It is quiet, with lots of open fields and space. There is a small downtown area and it is fairly close to Lisbon Falls and Auburn, or Brunswick/Topsham for amenities. Augusta is close too. There are good hospitals in Lewiston and Brunswick.
You could pick a worse place....I'd live there!

Why Maine at all, I wonder. On a recent trip that my wife and I took by car, we went down the western border of Virginia, passing through places like Winchester. We went all the way down into North Carolina, and saw absolutely NOTHING that we didn't really love.

Much of what we saw was very much like the farm areas inland from Maine's coast, and we want to go back and take a much longer look through the whole western Virginia area.

So, why would you chose rural Maine, instead of a more rural area of Virginia?

acadianlion, My wife has some medical problems that do better in the cold weather. The cost of housing is lower in Maine, ie: more house for the dollar. Last but not least, sometimes you just need to get away and experience new places. I did alot of camping in the mountains of va. for many years and it is beautiful. Stay away from central va though, way to ghetto in most places unless you want to spend upwards of $500,000 for a smallish house. Oh and dont get lost in Richmond at night, way too much crime. Thanks

I love Virginia, but Maine is for me. We go to Va. Beach since that is where my son is. Yes, he is in the Navy. I live in the Sebago Lake region and there are some nice little towns around here. I like the folks around here and there are all kinds of fun things to do around here. Actually all of Maine is great.!!

I'll second that and say that that these multiple posts about the Sebago area belong in the Portland sub forum. Good gawd!
