Howdy Mainiacs!

I'm a camper from down in mass. and i'm looking to find a place up in maine, on the ocean, where I can camp!

Basically im looking for a place to setup a tent, and have some smores for a night. I've browsed around, but found nothing...

Does anyone have any ideas on if this is at all possible, anywhere on the maine coast? Preferably southern coast.

thanks so much for your help!

There is a campground in Eastport called Seaview that may have tent sites on the beach. We stayed at Harris Point and had a fire ring where we were near the beach.

In Washington County we have the Cobscook Bay State Park which is 15-20 miles from Eastport, that has a lot of nice waterfront camping. Acadia National Park also has the Seawall camping. Just punching in "ocean front camping in Maine" yields a lot. Our best experience, and this is a real haul from Mass, is going to Grand Manan. You have go into Canada about 30 miles and take the ferry at Black's Harbour which is about 60 bucks round trip, but is also kind of Whale watch, since they seem to think the ferry is some kind of relative. The Campground is called Hole in the Wall, and the best sites are on the cliffs over the ocean. The sites are private, some you have to pack in a way, with incredible views of the water. There's hot showers at the camp entrance and we've never been bothered by bugs. There are some herring weirs at the foot of some of the cliffs, and you should be forewarned that the whales come in to feed at night and they can keep you up with all their noise and I think their website warns you of that.

Campingleo,
You have my expressed permission to camp and have a fire on Deer Island. It is just south of Little Machias on Map 27, D 1 in the DeLorme Atlas. From Route 191 go south on the Little Machias Road. Go left on the Sea Ledges Road. You can walk to the island at low tide. Be aware that you are going to be there for 12, 24 or 36 hours.

I would think that there are commercial camp grounds that hold supervised bonfires on the beach. Anywhere in Maine will require a fire permit of some sort I would think. Fires in state parks are quite seriously supervised and restricted as to area.

What makes you think that it might be possible to have a bonfire of any type on a Maine beach? Why do you think it would be easier than, say on Cape Cod? Oh, perhaps in Hyannisport in front of the Kennedy compound?

He asked. He received. It's that simple in Maine.

By the way, you need a fire permit if you intend to burn a big brush pile. No permit is necessary for cooking and warming. You are responsible for your fire. Make sure it's dead out when you leave.

I'm not quite sure where my initial post claimed I'm looking to have a bonfire. But thanks for your more than mature reply. ...

To those that replied, thank you very much. Northern Maine Land Man, I might be in touch.

Once again thank you !!!

I think Campingleo obviously missed something in NMLM's first post.

Acadianlion- I like the way you think!

Campingleo needs to Google campgrounds on the water.

Should someone mention that private property is just that? Private. If he ends up on mine he might find himself in a little trouble.

You're welcome. There are many people from other, more populous states who think that Maine is a wild open wilderness that is a sort of free range for them to roam on. Many well meaning folks from Massachusetts have been deeply involved in a campaign to "save" the north woods of Maine. Most don't have a lot of knowledge about nor have really been in Maine.

It appeared from the initial post that you wanted to wander into a nice, scenic place, pitch a tent, make a fire and enjoy the night sounds.

Maine is a place of privately owned property, environmental and other laws, and in what you referred to as "southern Maine", is the highest density of population in the state and by far, the most restricted use of any and all land waterfront or not.

Maine has a thriving campground industry, and you should search for a suitable one that will provide tent sites for vacationers from away.

I hope you enjoy your visit.

There are some people here who deeply resent being called "maniacs". That name is the nickname for the 101st Air Refueling Squadron, Maine Air National Guard.

Most people in Maine, when they feel the need to be called something, use the term, "Mainer".
