I lived there from 83 to 2000, just wondering if anyone has any photos of trains working the Eastport area of any vintage? IIRC the freight yards where the IGA is now were ripped up mid to late 80s, the tracks pulled roughly the same vintage, and the turntable was removed in the mid 90s (too many of us playing on it I guess)

Thanks in advance!

There is a yahoo group for Maine Maritime and Atlantic (formerly B and A) rail fans that you might want to look into joining, it's free. Someone in there would probably have some info.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the Yahoo groups didn't help.

Dave_in_NC, you lived in Eastport? What can you tell me about that area? We're relocating to Calais.

What do you want to know?

From what it was in all it's glory in the 90s (ha ha)

They've lost every major industry, the 2 movie stores have closed/burned; There's one remaining gas station (Jim Lowes Mobile on 190); I'm not sure they have a convenience store since the Irving burned

The downtown is as boarded up as ever, the local parks have fallen to disrepair beyond belief, the "Youth Center" really isn't for the youth anymore, just the Beano nights! A far cry from the fun I had growing up there in the 80s and 90s. I miss the days of the "Mex", Rolandos, and the Flag Officers Mess to name a few. I don't even know if the WaCo is still open.
-An aside, despite the WaCos name being commonly mistaken for Washington County, it was actually named for some folks by the name of Watts & Coldwell (again, IIRC). Kin to the late great Guy Dougherty.
The park at Shackford Head is wonderful, I hiked that almost every day of my teenage years. A wonderful view from the head of Lubec and the Connors fish pens in Broad Cove. You used to be able to sit there and watch the Freta C and the PW Connors deliver their goods up and down the waterway, from the Connors dock up to South Bay, Deep Cove, and Birch Point.
The best point on the Island though, is the cliff behind the elementary school. At night you can see the Cutler Towers, and its 360 degree view of the island day or night is spectacular!

Calais isn't too bad, Walmart, BK & McDs, Subway, etc. If the Chandler House (IIRC) is still open it's the best place to eat. They even have a few traffic lights up there, lol!!! Keenes Lake in Robinston is pretty nice, even in the 90s it was a step back in to a cheap 70s vacation movie. Boydens lake is OK, just shallow.

Ahhh, but I do miss Maine. Went up in November of 06 for a 2 week hunting trip, and again in February of this year. I (hopefully) will be visiting again mid to late January 09. Who vacations in Maine during those frigid winter months you might ask? Well, someone who is sick of 30 days of triple digit temps in the North Carolina summertime
